Maksym Akimov — founder and editor of Around Prague

Maksym Akimov is the founder and editor of Around Prague. I have lived in Prague since 2014.

I came here to study at a Czech university and went through the whole route that almost every foreigner here goes through: language courses, nostrification of my diploma, a student visa, my first job, my first company of my own. Then came residence permit renewals, moves between districts, tax returns, getting permanent residence, and now my citizenship application has been filed.

I went through every one of these steps myself: I stood in the queues at the foreign police, figured out the datová schránka (data box), paid fines for not knowing the rules and lost money where I did not have to. That experience is the reason Around Prague exists.

What I write about

• Documents and legal status — visas, residence permits, permanent residence, citizenship, nostrification, official certificates
• Business and taxes — živnost (trade licence), s.r.o., tax reporting, the flat-rate tax (paušální daň)
• Everyday life — housing, banks, insurance, transport, healthcare, schools and kindergartens
• Czechia for living — where to go, where to eat, what to see

The goal of the project is simple: someone who has just arrived should not make the same mistakes or pay for information that ought to be free.

How we work

Around Prague content is prepared by the editorial team using automation and artificial intelligence tools, first of all for translating and processing news reports. The facts come from official sources: government agencies, Czech media, press releases from the police and ministries. More in our editorial policy.
