Indian diaspora in Prague to hold solidarity rally with students in India

Members of Prague's Indian community will hold a peaceful demonstration on Friday, July 24, in support of students and young people in India protesting against irregularities in the national examination system. The event, called "Demonstration for Democracy," will take place from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM near the Indian Embassy in Prague.

According to organizers, the exact location is still being coordinated with Czech authorities. They stress that the event is not affiliated with the Indian Embassy and is being organized independently of it.

The protest was sparked by a scandal surrounding the 2026 NEET-UG entrance exam — one of India's most competitive tests, which grants access to medical education. More than two million candidates sat the exam this year. Students and activists claim the exam process was marred by leaked test papers and other irregularities, and are demanding greater transparency and accountability.

The organizers of the Prague rally say the demonstration is meant as a gesture of solidarity with students in India and a way to draw attention to issues of fairness in education, freedom of speech, and government accountability. "India's story reminds us that democracy depends not only on elections, but also on whether citizens are able to express their views peacefully," said Sakshi Gautam, one of the organizers of the Prague event. She added that regardless of political views, every student deserves a transparent system, accountability, and confidence in a secure future.

The Prague rally is part of a broader wave of protests and solidarity actions connected to the exam controversy in India. In recent weeks, the protests have expanded beyond the entrance exam issue, with participants now calling for a reform of the entire education system and greater accountability from officials, including India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The protest movement has become known as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) — a satirical youth initiative that began online in May 2026 and has since grown into a mass campaign. The name refers to remarks in which unemployed young people were compared to "cockroaches" — a slur the movement has since turned into a symbol of protest. The movement emerged both from allegations of exam irregularities and from broader frustration among young Indians over the state of education and employment opportunities.

The movement has drawn support from students, professionals, and families across India. Some protests in the country have led to clashes between demonstrators and police. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have expressed concern over the use of force at some of the rallies, while Reporters Without Borders has pointed to growing pressure on independent journalism in India.

Organizers of the Prague rally assured that participants would act within the bounds of Czech law and ensure the demonstration remains peaceful. They said the goal of the event is to give members of the Indian diaspora a chance to show their support for students seeking a fairer and more transparent education system.
