80-year-old Audi driver fatally strikes 95-year-old pedestrian at crosswalk in Ostrava

A 95-year-old man was killed in Ostrava-Poruba at an unregulated pedestrian crossing after being struck by an Audi driven by a man nearly 80 years old. The accident occurred at around 8:35 a.m., according to police spokeswoman Soňa Štětínská.

She said the driver was travelling from the direction of Pustkovec along 17. listopadu Street towards the intersection with Opavská Street. The pedestrian crossing without traffic lights is located precisely in this stretch, between the roundabout at Slavíkova Street and the junction with Opavská. The elderly man was crossing the road when, for reasons yet to be determined, he collided with the passing car.

Despite first aid being administered, the pedestrian died at the scene. Notably, the crossing is situated between a retirement home on one side of the street and a secondary school on the other.

Investigation and search for witnesses

A breathalyzer test on the driver came back negative. Given the severity of the incident, crisis psychologists from the police were called to the scene to provide psychological support to the victim's relatives and other affected individuals. Ostrava investigators are working to establish all the circumstances of the tragic road accident.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or the events leading up to it to come forward with any relevant information. Investigators are also asking drivers who were passing through the area at the time to provide dashcam footage. Information can be submitted via mobile phone at 724 895 281, or through the free hotline 158.
