In southwestern France, in the Gironde region west of Bordeaux, thousands of French firefighters, joined by colleagues from abroad, are continuing the battle against massive forest fires. According to official figures, the flames have already destroyed 42,000 hectares of forest and vegetation.
A cooler night since Monday has helped prevent the fires from spreading much further. However, authorities are watching the weather forecast with concern: temperatures in the Gironde region are expected to climb to 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days, which could sharply worsen the situation.
Bulldozers, local farmers and aircraft from various countries have all been mobilized to fight the blazes. France is also receiving help from a Czech helicopter, sent to assist with firefighting as part of an international support team.
