Belgian prosecutors have announced the detention of a Canadian citizen of Chinese origin who was completing an internship at NATO's military headquarters in the Belgian city of Mons. The woman is suspected of espionage on behalf of a third country and participation in a criminal organisation, and according to two sources familiar with the investigation cited by Reuters, that third country is China.
A spokesperson for China's diplomatic mission did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the situation. According to Canada's CBC broadcaster, the detained woman's legal name is Beiwei Zhang, though she is known professionally as Claire Zhang and used the name Katina Zhang on Facebook.
Reuters reports that the woman arrived in Mons roughly a year ago to take up an internship at NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), where she worked in the IT department. The agency stresses that this is not a student, but rather a professional with prior work experience.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Zhang previously worked at the European Space Agency (ESA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Her résumé also includes stints at Canadian government bodies, including the National Research Council, the national statistics agency, and the Canadian Space Agency.
Background checks on NATO interns are carried out by their home countries — in this case, Canada. Canada's Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, said earlier this week that authorities would review the country's vetting procedures, stressing the importance of "finding out what happened."
On Tuesday, prosecutors announced that Zhang's pre-trial detention had been extended by another month. Her lawyer has filed an appeal, with a ruling expected within the next two weeks.
Belgian prosecutors said it was SHAPE staff who first noticed the woman's suspicious behaviour and alerted Belgian intelligence services. A spokesperson for the headquarters said that, so far, nothing suggests the incident has affected NATO's operational readiness, its command structure, or the alliance's ongoing missions.
