In the town of Nýřany near Plzeň, a passer-by noticed a listless, motionless cat lying in the grass. The find was reported by Vlastimila Suchá of the Kočičí Svět cat welfare association, whom the woman who spotted the animal contacted.
At first, the women suspected the cat might have been hit by a car. However, X-rays at the vet ruled that out. “He was unbelievably infested with fleas. There were hundreds of them on him, and they were essentially what killed him,” Suchá said.

Veterinarian Kaslová explained that these parasites feed on the animal's blood and can drive it into anemia. “The cat was in truly very serious condition. I have never seen an animal so heavily infested with fleas,” she confirmed.
Despite efforts to provide help as quickly as possible, the animal's condition was too severe, and it could not be saved. “It's important not to let things get to this point, and to deal with the problem in time. We're now trying to find the owner and have contacted the mayor of Nýřany. If we don't find anyone, we'll turn to the police,” Suchá said.

She also recalled a similar case from last year, when volunteers took in a cat with a rotting paw, torn-out claws and broken teeth — the animal had been trying to free itself from an iron trap it had gotten caught in. That cat, too, could not be saved.
