In Chomutov, a drunk driver was caught trying to bribe police officers into taking a breath test in his place. The incident happened last week on the road from Chomutov toward Otvice, where the car was weaving dangerously and endangering other road users, police said.
A passer-by reported the suspicious car to police via the emergency line 158. According to the witness, the car was swerving across the road and getting in other drivers' way. A patrol soon found the car stopped in front of a roundabout, police spokeswoman Pavla Kofrová said.
During the check, the driver showed clear signs of intoxication. The first breathalyzer test showed 3.07 per mille, and the man agreed with that result. However, he refused the second test and instead repeatedly offered police money to have one of them take the test in his place, Kofrová added. By doing so, she said, the man committed another offense — attempted bribery.
Officers confiscated his driving licence on the spot and banned him from driving any further. He also refused to cooperate at the medical facility, declining a medical examination involving a biological sample and disputing the breath-test result.
Once he had sobered up, he was charged at the police station and accepted the charge. If found guilty of endangering traffic while intoxicated and attempted bribery, he faces up to six years in prison.
