Hong Kong tries ex-husband's family for murder of model Choi

A trial has begun in Hong Kong for the ex-husband of model Abby Choi, along with his father and brother, who stand accused of murdering the 28-year-old woman, parts of whose body police found in February 2023 at a house on the outskirts of the city. All three have pleaded not guilty.

Body found in a fridge and a soup pot

According to police, the victim's legs were found in a fridge, while her skull and several ribs were found in a soup pot. The model, who had more than 140,000 followers on Instagram, went missing shortly before the remains were discovered.

Appearing before nine jurors were her ex-husband Alex Kwong, his father Kwong Kau, and his brother Anthony Kwong. If convicted, they face life imprisonment. All three have also been charged with obstructing the lawful burial of a body; Alex and Anthony Kwong have already pleaded guilty to that charge.

A dispute over a luxury flat

Abby Choi and Alex Kwong had two children together before the couple divorced, after which the woman remarried and had two more children with her new husband. Even so, she initially maintained good relations with her former husband's family.

Kwong Kau and his wife moved into a luxury property that Choi had bought for around 165 million crowns and registered in her former father-in-law's name — according to the prosecution, to avoid higher taxes. Anthony Kwong later became the model's personal driver.

Relations soured when, from 2022, the woman decided to sell the flat. According to prosecutors, her ex-husband's family refused to accept this and decided to kill her. “All three decided to do it together,” prosecutor Charlotte Draycott told the court. The trial, adjourned until Friday, could last until December.
