New York police have arrested Anna Mochalova, who is accused of attacking two Jewish men in Manhattan: last Wednesday she struck both in the back with a syringe. Police classified the incident as hate crimes.
According to the police report, the first victim was a 26-year-old rabbi in traditional Hasidic dress. The Russian-speaking woman stopped him in the middle of the street. When the rabbi tried to leave, she followed him through the streets, jabbed him in the back with a syringe and ran off.
Five minutes later, Mochalova attacked a second Jewish man, who wore a kippah and also spoke Russian. She shoved him several times and threatened him: “Get out of here. I have a gun. I’ll shoot you.”
The woman then approached a third man and asked whether he was Jewish, police said. When he told her he was Muslim, she apologized and walked away.
On Saturday, police tracked Mochalova down using surveillance camera footage and charged her with hate crimes. On Sunday, a court at a preliminary hearing set bail at $50,000 (about 1 million crowns). Her next court date is Thursday, Oct. 29.
