Croatia Grinds to a Halt: Traffic Jam to the Coast Stretches 12 Kilometers

Croatia saw massive traffic jams on the main highways leading to the Adriatic coast on August 1, as one wave of holidaymakers left the resorts and another arrived. The A1 motorway, which runs from Zagreb through Ploče to Karamatići, took the brunt of the congestion.

According to local media, the queue in front of the Lučko toll station, heading toward the sea, stretched for more than 12 kilometers — backing up from the Zagreb bypass and the Kosnica interchange. On the Sveta Nedelja interchange side, the jam was somewhat shorter, at around seven kilometers.

Between the Lučko and Bosiljevo 2 interchanges, cars heading toward Dubrovnik crawled along in long columns, stopping every few minutes.

On the A2 motorway between Zagreb and Macelj, the queue in front of the Trakošćan toll station, heading toward Zagreb, reached roughly six kilometers and stretched all the way back into Slovenian territory. Traffic also backed up on the DC1 state road linking Zagreb, Knin and Split, where vehicles likewise formed kilometers-long columns.

The jams are the result of the traditional turnover of tourists at Adriatic seaside resorts, which always takes place on August 1.
