Czech Television (ČT) has announced that it will not represent the country at the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, citing the broadcaster's ongoing budget adjustments. ČT made the announcement in a brief statement.
“In 2027 we won't see the Czech flag on stage. But we'll all be cheering for others, and we believe we'll meet again at Eurovision someday,” the ČT statement said. The broadcaster thanked the fans and performers who have represented Czechia at the contest in previous years.
According to ČT, taking part in future contests is not ruled out — the matter will be decided separately for each year.
The uncertainty around ČT's budget stems from the ruling coalition parties — ANO, SPD and Motoristé sobě — intending to abolish the television and radio licence fees and replace them with funding from the state budget. This year, the fees are not expected to be abolished in time.
ČT has previously said it can save 350 million crowns from its own resources by suspending some investments and possibly dropping certain programmes.
Eurovision (officially the Eurovision Song Contest) is an international song competition in which performers from different countries compete, with the winner chosen by viewer vote. The contest was first held in 1956. Among its most famous winners are the Swedish group ABBA and singer Celine Dion.
