Death toll from night crash on D52 near Pohořelice rises to three

The death toll from a night-time crash on the D52 motorway near Pohořelice in the South Moravian Region has risen to three, South Moravian police spokesman David Chaloupka said on Sunday.

The accident occurred just after midnight on Saturday at the 21st kilometre of the D52 in the direction of Brno. According to police, the first car stopped after hitting wild boar, and a second car pulled up behind it. A third car then slammed into both stationary vehicles at high speed.

Rescuers at the scene attempted to resuscitate two women, but were unable to save them. Three other people injured — an adult man and two children — were taken to hospital with serious injuries, one of the children by helicopter. Police have not specified which of the injured later died.

According to official police statistics, five people were killed on Czech roads on August 1 alone, with another nine seriously injured.

At the end of July, police released a summary showing that six people died on South Moravian roads in the first month of summer, while the total number of recorded traffic accidents in the region rose by around a hundred over the year, exceeding 540 cases.
