Remembering the dead will cost more this year. Grave candles are about 10% more expensive and artificial flower arrangements 19–20% more expensive than last year. That is the finding of an analysis of promotional leaflets from the seven largest retail chains in Czechia, prepared by Česká distribuční, the country’s largest distributor of printed leaflets.
Company manager Jaroslav Stanek says Dušičky is one of the most important periods of the year for retailers, so they traditionally prepare a wide range of candles, flowers and themed decorations. “Average discounts in leaflets are slightly higher this year than last, but they have not offset the price rises, and shoppers will pay more for their Dušičky purchases,” he said.
This applies above all to artificial flower arrangements, but candles of various kinds have also gone up. “Fresh flowers, usually chrysanthemums or heather, have risen only slightly,” Stanek noted.
A candle in a plastic cup costs almost 20 crowns this year — two crowns, or 11%, more than a year ago. The average discount rose by eight percentage points (from 12% to 20%). Candles in glass lamps and lanterns cost roughly twice as much as plastic ones — almost 40 crowns each. Prices have risen by about 10% here too, even though the average discount grew from 12% to 17%.
Fresh flowers dominate among the floral decorations in the leaflets. Chrysanthemums or heather cost 71 crowns on average, against about 68 crowns a year earlier. Artificial arrangements have become noticeably more expensive: the average promotional price reaches 121 crowns, which is 20 crowns more than last year.
According to the analysis, the average promotional prices of the “Dušičky range” in October 2025 and 2026 look like this:
Plastic candle: 17.88 Kč → 19.89 Kč (+11%), average discount 12% → 20%.
Candle in a glass lamp: 35.22 Kč → 38.90 Kč (+10%), discount 12% → 17%.
Fresh flowers: 68.33 Kč → 70.97 Kč (+4%), discount 3% → 0%.
Artificial arrangements: 101.25 Kč → 120.90 Kč (+19%), discount 13% → 15%.
The whole set: 222.68 Kč → 250.66 Kč (+13%), discount 10% → 13%.
Stanek advises looking through the leaflets and comparing offers before buying: that can save more than a tenth of your spending.
This affects everyone who buys candles and flowers for Dušičky, foreigners included. Before buying, you can browse the chains’ leaflets and compare offers: according to Česká distribuční’s estimate, this can save more than a tenth of your spending.
