How to Work Out Which Doctor You Need in Prague

Sponsored

You need a doctor, but the first page of search results already gives you three different answers. One site suggests a GP, another a specialist, a third a package at a private clinic. You have not called anyone yet and you are already worried about picking wrong, wasting time and ending up in the wrong office.

In that situation, what matters is not finding "the best clinic" but working out where to start. That decides which questions to ask, which documents to prepare and how the visit will be paid for.

First rule out an emergency

Booking an appointment is not the right route if there is an immediate threat to life or the condition is deteriorating suddenly and seriously. In Czechia the medical emergency number is 155. 112 is the single European emergency number.

If it is not an emergency, answer two questions:

  1. Do you need a doctor who will look after you on an ongoing basis, or a solution to one specific problem?
  2. Do you already know which speciality you need, or are you unsure who to turn to?

For ongoing care and a general assessment you usually need a general practitioner. With a clear, specific request you can ask about booking a specialist directly. And a private medical centre is worth looking for when the language of communication, paying for yourself or having several specialities in one place matter to you.

When to start with a praktický lékař

In Czechia a general practitioner is called a praktický lékař. This is the permanent entry point into the system for common health problems, prevention, basic tests, prescriptions and referrals.

It makes sense to start there when:

Registering with a GP means long-term care. That is different from a one-off visit. If a clinic offers a general practitioner consultation, check whether registration is included or whether it covers a single appointment only.

If a doctor is not taking on new registered patients, that does not always mean every option is closed. Ask whether a one-off appointment is available, and contact your public health insurance company for help finding a contracted doctor.

When you can go straight to a specialist

If the direction of the problem is clear, approaching a specialist directly may be the more logical route. Dental questions go to a dentist, gynaecological ones to a gynaecologist, and follow-up on an already diagnosed condition can continue with the relevant specialist.

In Czechia you can usually see a specialist without a GP referral. However, a particular clinic, procedure or insurance programme may require a recommendation, a preliminary examination or prior approval of payment.

Before booking, tell the reception desk:

Do not choose a speciality based on a single symptom from search results. If it is unclear who to book with, it is safer to describe the problem to a GP or to the reception desk of a medical centre rather than trying to diagnose yourself.

What "private clinic" actually means

A private clinic is not a separate medical speciality. GPs, gynaecologists, urologists, surgeons and other specialists may all practise there. So the question "GP or private clinic?" is not quite the right one: a GP can work in a private medical centre too.

People often choose a private clinic when what matters is:

That said, the word "private" does not guarantee free slots, the language you need or insurance coverage. Those conditions have to be confirmed in advance.

Insurance and price: a short check

You do need to clarify how payment works, but for a first phone call you do not have to understand every detail of the insurance system.

With public health insurance, ask whether the doctor has a contract with your insurance company. If you cannot find a contracted doctor, the insurer is obliged to help you find an available option.

With commercial insurance, check the partner network and whether prior approval is needed. If you are paying yourself, ask for the full price of the first appointment and any possible additional costs.

That is enough to understand the terms before booking. The remaining details can be clarified once the clinic has confirmed a suitable doctor.

Five questions before you confirm the booking

A short conversation with the reception desk prevents a lot of misunderstandings:

  1. Is this doctor the right fit for my problem?
  2. Do I need a referral, previous results or insurance approval?
  3. Which language will the consultation and further communication be in?
  4. What is the price and what exactly does it include?
  5. Who will explain the results and organise the next step?

If you need to send medical documents, ask which secure channel the clinic uses. Do not send reports and results through random forms or open chats.

Prepare your information for the first contact

A short, clear description is enough for the reception desk:

A request like that helps the clinic identify the right specialist and the right format of appointment. Your full medical history should only be shared when it is genuinely needed and the clinic has specified a secure way to do it.

When coordination helps

Organising things gets harder when you need to identify the speciality, check insurance, gather documents, agree on a language and plan further tests all at once.

OpenMedical helps coordinate appointments in private healthcare in Prague, prepare documents, maintain communication with the chosen medical specialists and keep a clear sequence of next steps. OpenMedical is not an emergency service, does not guarantee the availability of any particular doctor and does not make decisions about diagnosis or treatment.
