An F-35B fighter jet belonging to the US Marine Corps has crashed near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California. The pilot managed to eject and was taken to hospital; their condition has not yet been disclosed.
The incident was confirmed by a Marine Corps spokesperson in comments to the military outlet USNI News. Footage circulating on social media shows the aircraft going down and exploding during its final approach for landing.
The F-35B is a variant of the F-35 fighter designed for short takeoff and vertical landing capability. While similar in size to the F-35A, it carries roughly a third less fuel and is built to withstand lower G-forces.
