Filip Salač Claims First-Ever World Championship Race Win in Moto2

Czech rider Filip Salač has claimed his first career victory in the motorcycle road racing world championship, winning the Moto2 race at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone. He is the first Czech to win a MotoGP-class race since Karel Abraham back in 2010.

A Dramatic Ride from Tenth to Victory

Salač started sixth but slipped back to tenth after the opening corners. Still, the Czech rider kept a steady pace, climbing to eighth by lap three, seventh by lap five, and back up to sixth by lap seven. By the halfway point of the race, he had rejoined the leading pack and was fighting for a podium spot.

Salač rode a smart, calculated race — avoiding unnecessary battles and saving his tyres in the hot conditions, holding back his attack until the closing stages. With five laps to go, Italy's Arbolino crashed out, and Salač seized the opportunity to move up to fourth. Two laps later he passed Spain's Ortolá to take third, and on the penultimate lap he moved into second place.

Victory in the Final Metres

On the finishing straight, the Czech surged into the lead — helped in part by a mistake from Spain's Gonzalez, who began celebrating prematurely. The final lap turned into a genuine drama as Ortolá launched an attack on Salač, the two riders even making contact, but the Czech held on to the lead all the way to the finish.

It was Salač's third podium of the season, but the first time the Czech national anthem has played in his honour on a race track — in his own words, the emotion overwhelmed him so much that he was laughing and crying at the same time. "I can't believe I'm first. It's just a dream, the best day of my life, but there's still work to do. Thank you to my family, my sponsors and my manager Jan Štovíček," Salač said after the race, before switching to Czech to thank everyone once more.

In the overall championship standings, Salač remains in eighth place with 108 points. Spain's Manuel Gonzalez leads with 197.5 points, with his compatriot Guevara in second on 155 points.
