Films with English Subtitles in Prague: This Week's Picks for Expats

Films with English Subtitles in Prague: This Week

This week Prague's cinemas are screening films with English subtitles — everything from Czech premieres to classics by David Lynch and Pedro Almodóvar — while streaming platforms have added a fresh batch of comedies and documentaries.

Top billing goes to "Everything As It Should Be" by director Bohdan Karásek, often described as a Czech take on Richard Linklater's "Before Sunrise" trilogy. The film follows a pregnant woman who, while walking the streets of Liberec, runs into her ex-husband. After premiering at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, it's now playing in Prague cinemas with English subtitles at Kino Světozor, Kino Aero, Kino Lucerna and Bio Oko.

On July 27, Kino Světozor (along with Kino Aero and Kino Lucerna) will screen the Czech drama "Only Beautiful Things to Look At" with English subtitles — a film about the forced sterilization of Romani women in 1980s Czechoslovakia. The same day, Kino Aero will show the Mexican drama "Flies," fresh off its Karlovy Vary run.

On July 28, Kino Aero's Legends programme will present David Lynch's cult classic "Blue Velvet" (1986). That same evening, MeetFactory hosts the Czech premiere of a documentary about Butthole Surfers, complete with a live interview featuring band members Paul Leary and Jeff Pinkus. Also on July 28, Kino Světozor will show "Fruit Gathering," a Czech-French-Myanmar co-production that picked up an award at Karlovy Vary (it screens July 29 at Kino Atlas and Kino Aero).

On July 29, Bio Oko will present the cult 1972 Ukrainian comedy "The Lost Letter" with English subtitles. The following day, July 30, the same venue offers a double bill from Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar — the classic "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" (1986) alongside his new film "Bitter Christmas."

On July 30, the Energy pub in Riegrovy sady kicks off its summer season of open-air American film screenings with a free showing of the beloved wartime romance "Casablanca." On July 31, Edison Filmhub screens John Waters' "Hairspray," preceded by a drag performance from the PINKBUS crew.

Kino Aero dedicates its July 31 evening to Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi, pairing her 1989 classic "My Twentieth Century" with her new film "Silent Friend." Edison Filmhub follows suit on August 1 with a similar double feature, pairing "Silent Friend" with the 2016 film "On Body and Soul."

On the streaming front, Netflix has added the comedy "72 Hours", starring Kevin Hart as a man who stumbles into a Miami bachelor party full of Gen Zers and tries to make sense of them. Apple TV+ has launched "The Dink," starring Jake Johnson as a washed-up tennis player who takes up pickleball. HBO Max has premiered a "Big Bang Theory" spin-off titled "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," with new episodes dropping Thursdays. Netflix has also released the true-crime documentary "A Toxic Love Story," which unpacks a tangled revenge scheme. And the fantasy blockbuster "Masters of the Universe" is already streaming on Prime Video — just two months after its theatrical release.

One title deserving special mention is the restored version of Věra Chytilová's "Tainted Horseplay" (1988), which was showcased at this year's Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The film opens as a raucous sex comedy before taking a dark turn into drama once an HIV diagnosis upends the lives of three carefree friends. It's regarded as one of the sharpest moral dramas to emerge from 1980s Czechoslovakia. In Prague, it screens with English subtitles on July 29 at Kino Atlas.
