Forecasters warn: Czechia could see 40°C heat again

Czech meteorologists have issued a warning for extreme heat and heat stress, which comes into effect on Wednesday. It will initially affect parts of Central Bohemia and Moravia, but by the end of the week the heatwave is expected to spread across a significant part of the country.

According to forecasters, on Wednesday, July 29, unusually warm air will move into Central Europe from the southwest, bringing intense heat to central and northwestern Bohemia as well as central and southern Moravia. Meteorologists note that in southern Moravia, temperatures above 32°C could already cause problems for agriculture and infrastructure.

The heat is expected to intensify further on Thursday. Forecasts indicate that daytime highs on Thursday and Friday will mostly reach 33–38°C, with thermometers potentially climbing as high as 40°C in some areas. A second, more serious level of warning will be issued for the regions of Czechia hit hardest by the heat.

“From Saturday, very warm weather will persist in some areas. We will be updating the warning over the coming days,” forecasters said, adding that how the weather will develop after the weekend remains uncertain for now.

In addition, a warning about an increased risk of wildfires starting and spreading remains in effect in southern Moravia. From Thursday, it will also extend to the Pilsen Region, the Zlín Region, and the Vysočina Region — where it will stay in force until further notice.
