Healing Springs of Czechia: Where to Go for Mineral Water in the Mountains

Dozens of mineral and healing springs survive in the mountains and foothills of Czechia, drawing pilgrims, spa-goers and nature lovers for centuries. According to the guide Kudy z nudy, these spots combine pure water, quiet forest trails and a special atmosphere — a great excuse for an easy, health-boosting walk.

Springs Steeped in History and Legend

One of the oldest sites is the spa town of Lázně Libverda, where the story of its healing springs dates back to the Middle Ages: the first mentions of its sour mineral waters appear as early as 1381. In the Beskydy Mountains, in the Velká Smradlavá valley near the Bílá tourist centre, the Smradlavá spring flows, known for its pungent sulphur smell.

On Křemešník Hill, hikers can find a “miraculous” spring whose water contains traces of silver — according to the guide, this is what keeps it safe to drink, while legend also credits it with healing powers. In Horní Lipová, the spring of Emperor Joseph II has been preserved, built in 1822 to commemorate the monarch’s visit in 1779.

The Priessnitz Trail and Other Routes

In Jeseník, a seven-kilometre educational trail named after Vincenz Priessnitz winds around the healing springs of the Lázně Jeseník spa. Along the way, visitors learn about the resort’s history and the life of the founder of hydrotherapy, and can see around 80 springs.

In Kašperské Hory, inside the Chapel of the Resurrection of Christ “Na Prádle,” the Vzkříšení spring still flows — the water has survived inside the building even after its roof and vault collapsed. In Teplice, the resort’s main healing resource is the thermal springs Pravřídlo and Hyginův, with water temperatures of 39–44 °C, used in all the local spa facilities.

A Spot for Quiet Relaxation

Another “miraculous” spring lies near a cave chapel dating back to 1892, a site linked to a restored pilgrimage path. Cycling enthusiasts should check out the Farská kyselka spring in the Slavkov Forest — it’s easily reachable by bike and sheltered by a wooden gazebo, making it a convenient spot for a short break.
