How Much Blueberry Should You Eat a Day for Gut and Brain Benefits — Scientists Answer

Nutritionists and scientists have pinned down the exact daily amount of blueberries that delivers the biggest health payoff: around 150 grams of fresh berries, or roughly one cup a day. Research shows this is the amount linked to a noticeable positive effect on blood vessels, metabolism, gut microbiome and brain function.

Wild forest blueberries are a classic Czech summer treat, used in dumplings, pies and ice cream. But beyond their taste, these berries carry real scientific value: their deep blue-purple colour comes from a high concentration of anthocyanins — powerful natural antioxidants that protect cells from oxidative stress. In this respect, wild blueberries significantly outperform cultivated garden varieties, including Canadian blueberries.

According to a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, regular intake of berry flavonoids improves cognitive function and memory in adults. Anthocyanins also act as a prebiotic in the large intestine, stimulating the growth of beneficial bacteria — particularly Bifidobacterium — and strengthening the gut barrier. Thanks to their high fibre content, blueberries also have a low glycemic index: they slow the absorption of simple carbohydrates and help prevent sharp insulin spikes.

How the berries are prepared matters too. Any heat treatment reduces their beneficial compounds, with losses depending on temperature and cooking time. Fresh or frozen blueberries retain up to 90% of their antioxidants. A brief heating of up to 5 minutes causes a loss of only 15-20% of vitamin C, while prolonged baking can destroy roughly half of the antioxidants.

A certified nutrition consultant advises adding blueberries to dishes at the very last moment: into a pie shortly before it's done, or, for dumplings, preparing a berry sauce by briefly heating the fruit and then blending it. The longer the berries are exposed to high heat, the more of their beneficial compounds break down.

Fresh blueberries are recommended for morning porridge, smoothies or yoghurt with nuts — an instant healthy breakfast or snack. For longer storage, freezing is the best option, while classic pies should be made with wild forest blueberries specifically. Popular summer options include no-bake blueberry cheesecake bites and the traditional berry sauce served with dumplings.
