"It Was Something Horrific": Parents of Children Poisoned by Toxin-Tainted Formula Speak Out About Doctors' Indifference

Czech authorities have identified dozens of cases of infant poisoning caused by the toxin cereulide, found in baby formula produced by several European manufacturers. According to the Ministry of Health, as of August 7, 31 cases had been recorded: four confirmed, twelve probable and fifteen possible. Parents of the affected children say they spent months unable to get help from doctors or state authorities.

Antonín, the father of one of the girls, watched his daughter grow weaker over several weeks: the child suffered from vomiting, dehydration, apathy and constant drowsiness. "What we went through with our daughter was something horrific," he said. For a long time, doctors could not identify the cause — the pediatrician insisted that vomiting in small children was normal.

A mother named Gabriela described a similar story. From the very beginning, she raised concerns with her doctor about her son's worsening condition, but the doctor refused to order additional tests. When she asked whether the formula could be to blame, she was told no — and was later informed that it sometimes takes infants several months to "get used to" a formula. The parents' full names are known to the editorial team but are being withheld due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Parents Left to Deal With the Problem Alone

Both parents say the state's response was the real problem. Despite repeatedly reaching out, they never received help. "The whole time, we as parents felt completely alone in this situation. We kept getting turned away and passed from one office to another, while officials from the Ministry of Health and the regional hygiene station just explained why nothing could be done," Gabriela said.

In June, the country's Chief Hygiene Officer, Barbora Macková, also acknowledged failures in communication. Speaking Tuesday at a meeting of the Senate Health Committee, which has been investigating the case, she said the state had already made changes. "Guidelines have been updated to streamline the flow of information and clarify responsibility for it, so that a situation like this doesn't happen again," Macková stated.

Senator Ondřej Šimetka (independent) confirmed the Ministry of Health's official figures at the committee meeting: 31 registered cases of children being poisoned by the cereulide toxin, which has been found in products from several baby-formula brands across various European countries.
