Jennifer Lopez at 57: How the singer stays in shape without diets or plastic surgery

Jennifer Lopez has celebrated her 57th birthday, and by her own admission, she's in better physical shape now than she was in her twenties. The secret to her youthful looks isn't strict dieting or plastic surgery, but a disciplined sleep schedule, regular workouts and mindful eating.

Over a career spanning nearly four decades, Lopez has become known not only as the voice behind hits like Waiting for Tonight, Let's Get Loud and Jenny from the Block, but also as an actress (with more than forty films to her name, including the award-nominated "Hustlers"), a successful entrepreneur, and mother to twins. Fans marking the occasion can revisit her latest film, "Office Romance," now streaming on Netflix.

According to the star herself, confidence grows with age. "Women get more confident as they get older," she told W magazine. "Men are confident, even overconfident, at twenty, while women still feel insecure at that age. But then things shift — women finally start feeling good in their own bodies, while men start facing self-doubt."

The foundation of her routine is proper sleep. Lopez sleeps 8 to 10 hours a night, otherwise she feels exhausted and irritable — something she simply can't afford given her packed schedule. According to a study published in the journal Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, quality sleep is linked to fewer visible signs of skin aging and faster recovery of the skin barrier.

The singer trains at least five times a week, and she names strength and endurance as her biggest assets. She works with trainers on both coasts of the US — Tracy Anderson in Los Angeles and David Kirsch in New York. "Sometimes I'm working late and think I have nothing left. But then I tell myself — it's just an hour, I just need to push through the laziness," she admitted to US Weekly. Lopez also loves dancing, though she doesn't count it as a workout, and meditates every morning, insisting that "beauty comes from within."

When it comes to food, the singer follows strict rules: she doesn't drink coffee or alcohol, and doesn't smoke, favoring green vegetables like asparagus, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and kale, while also indulging in the Puerto Rican cuisine she grew up on. Her diet includes plenty of pork and chicken, though at restaurants she typically opts for fish with vegetables. Her personal trainer, Tracy Anderson, also oversees her nutrition, insisting on organic food and a proper balance of quality protein.

Lopez's former personal chef, Kelvin Fernandez, who worked with her starting in 2018, revealed just how strict her regimen was while preparing for her Super Bowl performance. Nearly every day, the singer ate the same thing: egg-white omelets with vegetables for breakfast, without exception, along with a green juice made from spinach, cucumber and celery. Her mornings began with a glass of lemon water, and she drank at least seven glasses of water throughout the day. Her only indulgence after weeks of a protein-heavy diet was a trip to McDonald's, where she'd order a double cheeseburger with a generous helping of ketchup.
