Kraliky to Reenact a Battle Over Alternative History: What If Czechoslovakia Had Never Signed the Munich Agreement

This year's Cigelná military history reenactment in the border town of Kraliky will present an alternative version of events: what might have happened if, in the autumn of 1938, Czechoslovak leadership had refused to sign the Munich Agreement and the army had been ordered to defend the country instead. The news was announced by Martin Večeř, operations director of the Kraliky Military Museum.

Under the scenario devised by the organizers, Czechoslovakia launches a massive rearmament drive, Germany does the same, and in the spring of 1939 a German offensive begins, pushing Czechoslovak forces deeper into the country. Soviet and Romanian troops join the defenders in the battle. "We know that at this stage our army definitely wouldn't have been able to hold its own. How it all plays out is exactly what our Cigelná will show," Večeř said.

He admitted he was genuinely curious to see how the public would react to this "what if" scenario. "We're stepping onto thin ice here — we've never done anything like this before, so we'll see how it turns out. Personally, I'm really looking forward to it — we've got the chance to stage a spectacular battle," the museum director added. Whether such a fictional storyline becomes a regular fixture of future reenactments remains to be seen; organizers say they'll first gauge how audiences respond.

Period-accurate equipment from different armies

The military hardware appearing on the battlefield will be fully authentic to the era. Fighting on the German side will be historic Panzerkampfwagen light tanks (PZ1, PZ2, PZ3), while the Romanian side will field the AH4 light howitzer. The Czechoslovak army will be represented by the vz. 33 light armored tankette, and the Soviet side by the T-37 tankette.

The Czech Army's largest equipment display yet

This year the Army of the Czech Republic has put together one of the largest displays of logistics equipment in the history of its participation in the event. Visitors will be able to get a close look at Grove and Liebherr mobile cranes, a Scania tractor unit with a Goldhofer trailer, fire trucks and fuel tankers, and other army support vehicles.

"For the first time, the public will see the new four-axle Renault K P8×8. This vehicle will be used, for example, in engineering and logistics units and will gradually become part of the army's fleet," said Miroslav Horádek, director of the Logistics Agency.

Programme and practical information

The event traditionally draws large crowds to the border region. Kraliky Mayor Václav Kubín (the Sportovci movement) advises visitors to arrive early: "That way we can better handle the crowds and the registration process. Tickets are cheaper if bought online before Thursday."

As part of the Cigelná event, a free cultural programme will take place on Friday evening at Velké náměstí (Great Square). The main musical highlight will be a concert by Hana Vyroubalová and the HANKA HANKA BAND titled "HANKA Sings Hanka's Songs," featuring hits by nine-time Golden Nightingale award winner Hana Zagorová. Felix Slováček Sr. will appear as a special guest, and the evening will close with a concert by the band Plazma rock.
