Massive drone attack on Moscow: residential building damaged, airports shut down

Moscow and the surrounding region came under a large-scale attack by Ukrainian drones overnight, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, who repeatedly revised the number of intercepted aircraft as the night went on — first citing 12, then 81, before settling on a final tally of 390 drones.

Sobyanin said all the drones were shot down by air defence systems, and emergency crews are now working at the sites where debris fell. He gave no further details about the nature of any damage within the capital itself.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, reported that a drone struck a residential building in the town of Chekhov, south of Moscow. No information on casualties or fatalities has been released so far.

Following the attack, Russia's federal aviation agency Rosaviatsia announced the temporary closure of three Moscow airports — Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine is now in its fifth year, and aerial strikes have become a routine feature of the fighting on both sides. Moscow and Kyiv both say they are targeting each other's military sites and energy infrastructure, but civilians continue to die in these attacks — most often, according to available data, on the Ukrainian side, which is regularly hit by the Russian military.
