Petr Macinka, leader of the Motoristé sobě party and the Czech Republic's foreign minister, plans to run this autumn on two levels of Prague's municipal elections at once — for the citywide council and for the Prague 5 district council. The news was reported by Deník N.
Macinka himself explains the move as a matter of supporting a fellow party candidate rather than pursuing his own political ambitions in Prague's local politics. "This is about supporting our candidate, not about my desire to make a career in Prague municipal politics. Besides, as party chairman, I already deal with many of these issues anyway," he told the outlet.
Sports Minister Boris Šťastný will also take part in the Prague elections, though he does not intend to actually take a seat on the council. "Even if I were elected, I would give up the mandate," he told Deník N.
On the citywide Motoristé list, Macinka and Šťastný will occupy low, formally non-winnable positions. Still, thanks to preferential votes from voters, they have a chance of making it onto the council. Should that happen and they then decline the mandate, their places would be taken by substitute candidates from the same list.
In the Prague 5 district, Macinka has a more realistic shot at winning a seat — he is expected to take third or fourth place on the local list.
Topping the party's list for the Prague elections, and running as Motoristé's candidate for mayor, is businesswoman Klára Sovová. She runs the Krkonoše mountain lodge Luční bouda and is known, among other things, for her long-running disputes with the local national park administration.
