Ostrava ballet legend Vlasta Pavelcová, winner of the Thalia Award for lifetime achievement, has died

Vlasta Pavelcová, a ballerina considered one of the most significant figures in the history of Ostrava ballet, has died at the age of 93. She was a leading soloist with the ballet company of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava, where she performed from 1950 to 1976. The theatre announced her death on its website.

According to the theatre, Pavelcová was known for her striking stage presence, aristocratic bearing, and remarkable ability to fill her balletic characters with rich inner life. Over three decades on the Ostrava stage, she became an unforgettable performer of lyrical, dramatic and tragic heroines.

She was born on 14 August 1931 in the Ostrava district of Vítkovice. Her love of dance revealed itself early — she later joked that she had been an extraordinarily active child and may well have started dancing before she was even born. Her real journey into ballet began at the age of fifteen, when she persuaded her parents to let her attend Emerich Gabzdyl's ballet studio. Dance captivated her so completely that within a year she had decided to pursue it professionally. After brief training and auditions in Prague, she joined the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava in 1946 as a member of the corps de ballet. Emerich Gabzdyl, then head of the Ostrava ballet company, became her first teacher, mentor, choreographer and lifelong guiding influence.

According to the theatre, Gabzdyl quickly recognised her exceptional talent: by the age of nineteen, he had already entrusted her with one of the most demanding roles in the classical repertoire — Odette in Swan Lake. Her particular gift lay in portraying characters where feminine fragility met tragedy, passion and a sense of fateful inevitability. Critics especially praised her ability to hold the audience's attention even in moments when she appeared outwardly still on stage. With her expressive face and aristocratic, tragic bearing, she became an ideal interpreter of dramatic heroines.

Her repertoire was remarkably broad. She danced Odette and Odile in Swan Lake, Swanilda in Coppélia, the Mistress of the Copper Mountain in The Stone Flower, the Girl in The Miraculous Mandarin, and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. Among her other roles were Desdemona in Othello, Zarema in The Fountain of Bakhchisarai, as well as the title roles in Viktorka and Maryčka Magdonova.

A special place in her career belonged to the role of Sulamith in Richard Strauss's The Legend of Joseph — a performance for which she was honoured at the World Festival of Youth in Vienna in 1959. The same year, she received the state award "For Outstanding Work," and in 1972 she was named Distinguished Artist. The pinnacle of professional recognition came in 2002, when she received the Thalia Award for lifetime achievement in ballet and mime.

Vlasta Pavelcová devoted her entire artistic life to her native Ostrava, giving the Ostrava ballet company her youth, her creative energy and her most memorable roles. When asked whether she would choose the same path again, she always answered without hesitation, describing the ballerina's profession as a demanding calling — yet a beautiful life's work all the same. "If I could be born again, I would want to be exactly who I was — a dancer in Ostrava," she once said.
