Staff from the observatory and planetarium in Brno took to the skies in a hot-air balloon to film the partial solar eclipse under clear skies and perfect observing conditions.
According to the observatory, the Sun first appeared in the frame at 19:22, just as the Moon began to brush its edge. Over the following minutes the overlap grew, and by around 20:12 the Moon had covered almost the entire disk of the Sun. The maximum phase of the eclipse over Brno reached 86 percent.
Total Eclipse in Spain
On the Iberian Peninsula, the eclipse reached its peak around half past eight in the evening. It was total along a band stretching from Spain's northwest to its southeast coast, as well as over the Balearic Islands, where the Moon completely blocked the Sun for almost two minutes.
According to Spanish authorities, huge crowds turned out to witness the rare natural phenomenon — millions of people watched the sky, with some travelling to the country specifically for the spectacle.
