Alaska Airlines removed a 40-year-old passenger from a flight after she began preaching to fellow travelers from the aisle while the plane waited for clearance to depart. The incident took place on July 30 aboard a flight from Orlando, Florida, to San Diego, California, the airline confirmed.
The woman, Whitney Lynn, who describes herself as an "internationally recognized evangelist and influencer," used the flight delay as an opportunity to deliver a religious sermon to her fellow passengers. "I know we're all waiting. It's annoying. But I want to tell you that God's timing is perfect and God knows everything. Maybe today He's protecting you from danger," she began, filming the scene on her phone, according to People magazine.
She went on to tell passengers that Jesus Christ loved them so much that he died on the cross for their sins, urging everyone to remain calm. Flight attendants took notice of the sermon and, after consulting with the captain, deemed her behavior a safety concern and asked her to leave the aircraft.
Lynn tried to push back: "You can't just tell me to gather my things and leave without explaining why." The crew responded that they no longer felt safe with her on board. "Oh my God, I had no idea the message of Jesus Christ was dangerous. Is it a weapon? Is free speech dangerous?" she continued to argue while packing up her belongings.
She recorded all of this on video as well, including her subsequent encounter with airport security staff. On the way back to her hotel, she wrote on her Instagram account, she "managed to convert" the shuttle driver to Christianity and prayed together with a man she met at the hotel's front desk.
"Looking back, I can clearly see God's hand in all of this. What seemed like a setback became an opportunity for people to hear the gospel and dedicate their lives to Christ," Lynn wrote in her post. She added that she was glad to preach to her fellow travelers: "They had no choice but to hear the truth. It was spiritual warfare. Demons don't like the name of Jesus."
Alaska Airlines confirmed the incident. According to the carrier, before the departure of Flight 708 from Orlando to San Diego on July 30, the crew grew increasingly concerned about the behavior of one passenger, which was affecting other people on board. "For safety reasons, we asked the passenger to deplane," the airline said in a statement. The company also noted that Lynn will no longer be permitted to fly with Alaska Airlines or its affiliated carriers, Hawaiian Airlines and Horizon Air.
