Pentagon: War with Iran Has Cost the US Almost $800 Billion

US military operations against Iran have cost the American budget nearly $800 billion, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth told the Senate Appropriations Committee.

According to Reuters, the new cost estimate is $8 billion higher than the previous publicly disclosed figure. Hegseth noted that the total already accounts for expected expenditures through September 30.

The hostilities, launched by the US and Israel in late February with joint strikes on Iran, have continued with varying intensity for five months now.

The Pentagon chief also acknowledged that without urgent additional funding, the military will have to scale back training programs. "Current and future training will have to be curtailed if we don't urgently address our budgetary needs," Hegseth said, responding to a question from Republican Senator Susan Collins about the possible consequences of underfunding.

According to Reuters, this marked Hegseth's first public appearance before lawmakers since the US military resumed operations against Iran earlier this month. Joining him before the Senate committee was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine.
