Pineapple: Why Fresh Fruit Beats Canned, and How to Pick a Good One

Pineapple: Why Fresh Fruit Beats Canned, and How to Pick a Good One

Pineapple is usually associated with summer cocktails, fruit salads or fruit compote, but this tropical fruit can do far more for your health than most people realise — as long as you choose the right form of it.

Pineapple is almost entirely water, making it a great ally for staying hydrated. At the same time, it packs a whole range of beneficial nutrients: vitamin C, manganese, potassium and calcium — all essential for a strong immune system, healthy bones and proper muscle function. Its signature sweet-and-sour tang comes from organic acids, which not only stimulate the appetite but also aid digestion and the body's natural detox processes.

Pineapple's real "secret weapon" is bromelain, a unique complex of enzymes that helps the body break down proteins. It's thanks to bromelain that fresh pineapple takes some of the strain off the pancreas and makes it easier to digest heavy meals. But its effects don't stop there: bromelain has a pronounced anti-inflammatory action, reducing swelling and pain — particularly valuable during recovery from injuries or with joint problems. It also improves blood circulation and may have a beneficial effect on blood pressure, supporting overall heart and vascular health.

On top of that, pineapple is rich in fibre, which is good for gut health, and has a mild diuretic effect that helps the body shed excess fluid. It's often dubbed a "fat burner" — not because it breaks down fat itself, but because its low calorie count and metabolism-boosting properties make it an excellent addition to a weight-loss diet.

To get the most benefit, experts recommend choosing fresh pineapple whenever possible. The difference between fresh and canned is huge: heat processing and prolonged storage in syrup destroy bromelain and most of the vitamin C. Canned pineapple is, essentially, a sugary dessert rather than a health food. The dried version is in a similar boat — fine as a quick snack on the go or mixed with nuts, but best enjoyed in moderation given its high sugar concentration.

Many people are put off buying fresh pineapple by the peeling process, though it's actually quite simple. The key is choosing the right fruit: it should smell pleasant, feel slightly firm to the touch, and have yellowish skin. At home, cut off the leafy crown and the bottom, stand the fruit upright, and slice off the skin from top to bottom with a knife. The small, hard "eyes" that remain can be cut out or left as they are, while the tough fibrous core is best removed — the easiest way is to cut the fruit into quarters and simply slice away the centre.

Pineapple is incredibly versatile in the kitchen. It's best eaten raw, which preserves all its enzymes, though it also shines when briefly grilled, which brings out its sweetness even more. It works beautifully in morning smoothies, yoghurt bowls and granola, and pairs surprisingly well with savoury dishes — poultry, shrimp, or a fresh salsa with chilli, coriander and lime — helping to balance out spicy and salty flavours.

One word of caution: thanks to its enzymes and acids, fresh pineapple is quite potent, so eating large amounts can cause irritation of the lips or tongue in sensitive people.
