Pirated copy of Nolan's "The Odyssey" racked up 2 million views on X before accounts were banned

Pirated copy of Nolan

Christopher Nolan's new film "The Odyssey" ended up freely available on the social platform X over the weekend — a high-quality copy of the movie was watched by more than two million people before the platform's administration banned the accounts responsible. The BBC reported the news, citing media sources.

According to Variety, a post featuring the high-resolution version of the film racked up 2.1 million views in just two and a half hours before the account was suspended. Users reacted with shock in the comments: one wrote that "the entire film has been posted as a video on Twitter — this is insane," while another admitted they initially thought it was fake before confirming it was genuine.

One user joked that having "The Odyssey" in a single post was "exactly how Nolan intended it to be watched." It's worth noting that the American-British director shot the entire 172-minute film on 70mm film — a large-format, high-resolution medium designed for screening on IMAX's giant cinema screens.

On Sunday, another leak appeared on X, this time in lower quality, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Before it was taken down two hours later, the post had already been viewed by nearly 50,000 people.

Universal, the studio behind the film, responded with an official statement: "We are aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and have moved immediately to have it removed. We take copyright infringement seriously and will take all necessary steps to protect our content and intellectual property rights."

Despite the leaks, they're unlikely to have a significant impact on the film's box office performance. According to the BBC, the movie earned around $215 million (more than 4.5 billion crowns) worldwide during its second weekend in theaters, bringing its total earnings to $640 million.

Nolan's film, based on Homer's "Odyssey," premiered in Czech cinemas on July 16.
