Podyjí National Park unveils revamped nature trail featuring 58 tree species

Podyjí National Park in Czechia has reopened its revamped educational trail, "Trees of Podyjí," which introduces visitors to 58 species of woody plants — ranging from towering forest giants to shrubs, fruit trees and grapevines. The news comes from the national park administration.

According to Veronika Dubovská, the specialist who selected the plants for the route, the goal in designing the trail was to showcase the full diversity of the local landscape. Each stop along the way features brief descriptions and QR codes, giving visitors the option to learn more about the region's nature.

Podyjí is regarded as one of the most species-rich areas in Czechia: its mix of forests, steppes, orchards and floodplain meadows provides the conditions for more than 100 species of trees and shrubs to grow.

Pavel Müller, director of the national park administration, noted that this year Podyjí is celebrating 35 years since its founding. He said that alongside protecting the region's valuable nature, it's equally important to help people appreciate that value — and the updated trail combines conservation work with modern environmental education, inspiring both visitors and schools to explore the park's unique landscape.

The trail is designed not only for individual tourists but also for school groups. Starting in August, the park administration will open registration for guided tours for kindergartens, primary and secondary schools.

The information panels along the route are mounted on posts made from black locust — an invasive species being removed as part of the park's land management efforts. In this way, the sturdy wood of trees slated for felling was repurposed for the trail's construction.
