Students in Brno have called a warning strike for Nov. 3 in support of public media, Czech Television and Czech Radio, and their employees. Ludmila Borzová, speaking for the organizers, announced it on Wednesday at a rally in the city center.
According to Borzová, students joined other universities on Monday in entering strike readiness. They want to build a strong network of students who are not afraid to speak up when others stay silent. The Student Solidarity Committee called the strike in response to government politicians who, in the students’ view, do not want a dialogue with the public. On Instagram, the committee urged other universities, schools and initiatives to join.
Representatives of Czech Television and Czech Radio, student and cultural initiatives, and the Husa na provázku theater spoke at the rally. Street performers played songs, and the Czech anthem and a reworked version of a song from “Večerníček” were heard. Borzová also urged participants to support the “Million Moments for Democracy” demonstration on Sunday, Nov. 15, at Letná in Prague.
Hundreds of people gathered on Wednesday afternoon on Náměstí Míru in Plzeň to protest the abolition of TV and radio fees. The speakers included actor and musician Igor Orozovič, members of Plzeň’s J. K. Tyl Theatre and Alfa Theatre, students and the clergywoman Elva Frouz. Jan Valdman of the Prohnutí organization called on Czech Television to find the courage to switch off its broadcast during the strike.
The initiative Veřejnoprávně, which brings together employees of public media, also announced a one-day strike by Czech Television and Czech Radio staff on Nov. 3.
The speakers rejected the abolition of license fees and spoke out against the plans of Andrej Babiš’s government (ANO). At the end of last week, the coalition of ANO, SPD and the Motorists pushed through the Chamber of Deputies in first reading a bill to abolish the radio and television fee and move the funding of Czech Television and Czech Radio to the state budget.
