A new poll has revealed that a large share of Czech society has no idea who currently heads the country's biggest opposition parties. According to the survey, fewer than half of respondents could correctly name their party's sitting chairman, while some still identify politicians who stepped down from their posts many months ago.
STAN leader Vít Rakušan was correctly identified by 44.8% of Czechs, Pirate Party chairman Zdeněk Hřib by 42.9%, and ODS leader Martin Kupka by 42.6%. In other words, on average only two in five respondents know who he is.
The picture for the remaining opposition parties is noticeably bleaker. Fewer than a quarter of respondents recognised TOP 09 chairman Matěj Ondřej Havel, while only a fifth could name KDU-ČSL leader Jan Grolich.
According to Michal Malý, a political scientist at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University, the main reason behind this confusion is the fragmentation of the opposition. "There are five parties in opposition, and each one is trying to cast itself as the leading voice, which leaves voters confused about the overall picture," he noted.
Political analyst Tereza Fridrichová of NMS says part of society still names the predecessors of current party chairs. Almost 5% of respondents believe ODS is still led by Petr Fiala, while more than 8% think Ivan Bartoš still heads the Pirates. Fiala stepped down as chairman back in January this year, and Bartoš has not led the party for almost two years — since November 2024.
"The shift to new leadership still hasn't fully settled in the public consciousness," Fridrichová stressed.
Among each party's own supporters, name recognition is noticeably higher. 73.7% of ODS voters could identify Martin Kupka, and 75.7% of STAN voters could name Vít Rakušan. Meanwhile, Pirate Party leader Zdeněk Hřib is recognised by only slightly more than half of the party's supporters — 52.8%. For TOP 09 and the Christian Democrats, the poll's authors did not provide comparable figures, noting that the sample of their voters was too small to draw reliable conclusions.
