Early in the morning, at around 4:30 a.m., part of a suspended ceiling collapsed in Terminal 1 of Prague’s Václav Havel Airport. According to an airport spokesperson, no one was injured: the area was closed and empty because of ventilation repairs.
Letiště Praha spokeswoman Denisa Hejtmánková said the section where the collapse happened had been closed off and cleared of people in advance because of ongoing works. As a result, there was nobody inside when the ceiling came down.
The reconstruction of the ventilation system in Terminal 1 began in September and is being carried out without interrupting airport operations. Hejtmánková said that whenever the contractor works on suspended ceilings, the relevant section is always fenced off and safety measures are put in place.
The same project is also expanding border control capacity. Five more standard booths and four automated EasyGoGates will be added. The terminal currently has 12 standard booths and nine automated gates.
Work in Terminal 1 will continue until the end of April next year.
