Prince Harry, together with his wife Meghan Markle and their children, is planning to move back to the UK on a permanent basis — the first such move since 2020, when the couple stepped back from royal duties and relocated to California. According to The Telegraph, the family intends to settle into a private home outside London that has no ties to any royal residences.
The couple has not yet revealed the exact location of their new home or which school their children will attend. Sources cited by the newspaper say Britain is set to become their main long-term base, although a final decision on a permanent move has not yet been made. Harry and Meghan will, however, keep their homes in Montecito, California, and in Portugal.
According to People, King Charles III learned of his son's plans on Sunday, August 16, and welcomes the family's return. Harry and Meghan already visited Britain earlier this summer, when their children, Archie and Lilibet, saw their grandfather for the first time in more than four years. Prince William and Princess Kate have also been informed of the planned move.
Returning to the country does not automatically mean Harry and Meghan will resume any official role within the royal family, though British media have not ruled out some degree of involvement in the future. Since relocating to the US, the couple has repeatedly and publicly criticised the workings of the monarchy, and Harry himself detailed his strained relationships with his father and older brother William in his memoir, "Spare."
The move is expected to give Harry more time to devote to the charities he works with — Scotty's Little Soldiers, WellChild, and the Invictus Games. Meghan, meanwhile, will continue growing her lifestyle brand, As Ever, along with her other projects.
People reports that the decision to relocate also suggests that after years of concern over his family's safety, Harry now feels confident enough to settle back in Britain, even though UK authorities have not yet granted him official police protection.
The outlet also notes the couple's dissatisfaction with the situation in the US and their previously tense relationship with President Donald Trump. During Harry's recent visit to Britain, he was reportedly pleased by the public's interest in Meghan — according to sources close to him, he hopes that more frequent in-person appearances alongside the British public will help improve attitudes toward his wife.
