Referee's Controversial Call Divides Fans as Slavia Thrash Slovácko 5-1

Referee

In the opening round of the Czech football league, Slavia Prague crushed Slovácko 5-1, though the biggest talking point wasn't the scoreline but a contentious moment in the first half: home defender Kolísek fouled visiting striker Ndefe, who looked set to go through one-on-one with goalkeeper Marković. Referee Pechanec, however, opted for a yellow card rather than a red.

The decision split fans and pundits into two camps. Former Slovácko, Liberec and Mladá Boleslav defender Jan Rajnoch, working as a studio pundit for Oneplay Sport, backed the referee's call. "Not so long ago that would have been a straight red, but under the new interpretation of the rules — which, unfortunately, isn't yet applied consistently in Czech football — a yellow card was the correct decision," he said.

According to Rajnoch, the incident took place 40 metres from goal, Ndefe didn't have the ball under full control, and defender Ngessan could theoretically have caught up with him — meaning it wasn't a clear-cut denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Fellow Oneplay pundit David Kalivoda disagreed, arguing the yellow card was an obvious mistake and that Slavia's players could have reacted sooner to close down the danger.

Slovácko supporters were in no mood for philosophical debate: the side from Uherské Hradiště fell apart defensively, going into the break trailing 4-1. After the restart, defender Juroška was sent off for a needless foul, putting the result beyond doubt as the score climbed to 5-1. New head coach Jan Jelínek's debut turned into a nightmare.

The match was also notable for the near-total absence of the usual crowd noise: Slavia are serving a disciplinary suspension stemming from May's derby against Sparta, which was abandoned due to fan disorder and later awarded to Sparta as a technical win. As punishment, Slavia must play four home matches behind closed doors — two were served at the end of last season, with two more to come this campaign.

Thanks to a special exemption, children under 12 accompanied by adults were still allowed into the stadium — around 1,500 spectators were present, and excited young voices could be heard rising into shrieks throughout the game. Before kick-off, a fan zone outside the stadium offered kids a bouncy castle, a football cage and a shooting range for practising shots on goal. Slavia's next closed-doors fixture at Eden comes against Pardubice in a fortnight.
