The Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences, where Jungwirth worked, confirmed on its website that the scientist died tragically, without providing further details.

At the institute, Jungwirth and his research group studied the transition of substances from a non-metallic to a metallic state. The work was based on the premise that not only solid materials but also certain liquids can be classified as metals. The scientist had previously served as chairman of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic.
