In the Jura mountains, straddling the border between France and Switzerland, lies the town of Saint-Ursanne — a place well worth visiting for anyone exploring the region's cliffs and hills. The medieval atmosphere here has been beautifully preserved, with old burgher houses and a Romanesque-Gothic collegiate church lining the narrow streets.
You can enter the town through one of three gates, but the most scenic route is via the Porte Saint-Jean, at the end of the bridge crossing the River Doubs. On the bridge, travelers from Czechia are in for a pleasant surprise — a statue of John of Nepomuk that will feel like a touch of home. Just past the gate, there's a tourist information center stocked with plenty of material on the town and its surroundings.
The town's main landmark is that very collegiate church, beneath which hides a Gothic crypt with unusual columns and vaulted arches. Saint-Ursanne also has no shortage of cafés and cozy spots to relax — one particularly recommended for its view of the river and bridge.
More adventurous visitors should climb up to the Chapelle Saint-Jean on the hill above town, which offers a stunning panoramic view over Saint-Ursanne and the surrounding Jura mountains.
