Shelter in Lanškroun Raises Funds to Treat Eight Neglected Dogs

An animal shelter in Lanškroun (Pardubice Region) has launched a fundraiser to treat eight dogs that arrived in extremely poor condition after years of neglect by their owners. According to shelter staff, the animals range in age from a few years old to 12–14 years, and the effects of long-term neglect have taken a toll on every single one of them.

"They arrived emaciated, unsocialized and full of fear. They're afraid of unfamiliar sounds, human touch and even routine handling," the shelter reported. The dogs were found to have eye problems, difficulties with movement and coordination, and dental issues so severe that their teeth are literally rotting in their mouths.

Particular concern surrounds four female dogs named Penelope, Hera, Amphi and Circe, all of whom have been diagnosed with serious uterine inflammation. Their condition could deteriorate sharply at any moment, and without urgent surgery their lives are at risk. After the operation, the dogs will need a course of medication, regular check-ups and a long, difficult recovery period.

The shelter's other animals also need help — further examinations, blood tests, treatment for eyes and teeth, medication and quality nutrition. The shelter is accepting donations ranging from a few hundred to tens of thousands of crowns, whether as one-time contributions or monthly support.

The Lanškroun shelter has been operating since 2022 on the grounds of the town's Secondary School of Agriculture and Veterinary Studies. The Pet Heroes association running it has existed for more than a decade.
