Sinologist: Tatra's inclusion on China's sanctions list is no coincidence — it's a signal to Prague

Chamber of Deputies Speaker Tomio Okamura (SPD) has become the first Czech government official in seven years to officially visit China. He hopes the visit will improve relations with Beijing and boost mutual tourism between the two countries.

During the trip, Okamura was received by Zhao Leji, chairman of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee. According to Xinhua, Zhao praised the "positive and pragmatic policy" of the new Czech government toward Beijing and expressed confidence that the current favorable momentum in bilateral relations would continue.

Okamura himself said he believes the visit succeeded in restoring relations between the Czech Republic and China. With the Chinese side, he discussed a possible visa waiver for Czechs traveling to China, the resumption of direct Prague–Shanghai flights, and the possibility of bringing the Terracotta Army to the Czech Republic for an exhibition.

During talks between the Czech delegation and the Chinese parliament, new information also emerged about a Czech citizen detained by Chinese authorities in late June on suspicion of threatening state security. Czech intelligence services had previously not ruled out that Beijing might be trying to trade the detained Czech for a Chinese national arrested in the Czech Republic.

Relations between Prague and Beijing have deteriorated markedly in recent years, primarily over the Taiwan issue. China sharply criticized Senate Speaker Miloš Vystrčil's (ODS) visit to Taiwan in 2020, as well as his repeat trip in June of this year. Beijing considers the island part of its territory and, following its "One China" policy, rejects official contacts between foreign politicians and Taiwanese representatives.

Commenting on the situation, Olga Lomová, a sinologist at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague, notes that the inclusion of Czech manufacturer Tatra on China's sanctions list is no coincidence, but part of a broader political game in which Beijing demonstrates toughness toward countries it deems insufficiently loyal.

It remains to be seen how Okamura's visit will affect the Czech Republic's future relations with China — and what will become of the Czech citizen detained in Beijing.
