Six Killed in One Day: Monday Becomes the Deadliest Day on Czech Roads This Year

Six people died in traffic accidents across Czechia on Monday — the highest single-day death toll since the start of 2024, according to preliminary police statistics.

Until now, the deadliest day had been Friday, June 26, the last day of the school year, when five people were killed in road accidents.

Monday's tragedies included a collision between a car and a truck near Litomyšl, which claimed two lives, and another fatal crash involving a car and a truck near Holovousy. Deadly accidents were also reported in the Hradec Králové and Olomouc regions.

Prague, too, saw tragedy that day. "In Prague 10, on Ruská Street, a cyclist riding an e-bike crashed into a pole on Monday. He was taken to hospital with injuries but later died," said police spokesman Jan Rybanský.

According to the statistics, improper driving was the most common cause of accidents — a category that police say includes failing to maintain a safe following distance, errors in signaling turns, and driver inattention.

Since the beginning of July, 33 people have already died in road accidents in Czechia. By comparison, 35 people were killed in traffic accidents during the entire month of July last year.
