Slavia Prague women's team lose in extra time to Glasgow Rangers, exit Women's Champions League qualifying

Slavia Prague women

Slavia Prague's women's football team fell 1:2 in extra time to Scotland's Glasgow Rangers, bringing their run in the Women's Champions League qualifying tournament to an end. The match was played on the artificial turf of Broadwood Stadium and served as the semi-final of the mini-tournament in the second qualifying round.

Neither side managed to break the deadlock in the first half. After the break, the Prague side took the lead thanks to a goal from American forward Bredeová in the 58th minute. But the Scots proved stronger when it mattered most: Docherty levelled the score in the 81st minute, and Austin struck the winner in extra time, in the 102nd minute.

The finale had plenty of drama: Rangers' Hendley was sent off in the 114th minute, but Slavia were unable to make the most of their numerical advantage in the time that remained.

Czech clubs on different European paths

Czech champions Sparta Prague, thanks to a high club coefficient, earned direct entry into the third qualifying round of the Champions League — leaving them just one two-legged tie away from reaching the league phase. Slavia, as the league's runners-up, began their European campaign earlier, from the preliminary round, which has now ended in disappointment.

Under the tournament's format, winners of the mini-tournaments advance to the third qualifying round of the Champions League. Teams finishing second continue their campaign in the second qualifying round of the Europa Cup, while third-placed sides move into the first qualifying round of that competition.

In the mini-tournament's other semi-final, Amsterdam's Ajax thrashed Denmark's Brøndby 2:0.
