A powerful cold front will sweep across Central Europe on Thursday: after an inflow of warm air from the south, Czechia will cool sharply, in places by almost 10 °C. Precipitation is forecast to cover the whole country.
Czechia will then be governed by a cooler, damper westerly flow with changeable weather, and another front with fresh rain arrives on Saturday. Next week the weather may gradually settle as an area of high pressure expands into Central Europe from the southwest.
Thursday will be mostly cloudy, with some clear spells at first. Cloud will thicken from the west, bringing rain and showers, while the southeast of the country may see occasional thunderstorms. The front is moving fairly quickly, so heavy rainfall is not expected: most places will get 1 to 15 millimetres, more in thunderstorms.
Temperatures will vary noticeably: in western Czechia the high may reach only about 16 °C, while in southern Moravia it could hit a summery 25 °C. Most of the country will see 19 to 23 °C. Wind will strengthen as the front passes, with gusts reaching around 15 m/s in places.
Friday stays partly cloudy, with occasional rain or showers in places. Overnight lows will fall to 5–10 °C, with daytime highs of 11–16 °C. The westerly wind will be moderate, at 3–7 m/s.
Saturday is expected to be very cloudy with rain or showers in places. Nights will again be 5–10 °C, days 10–15 °C, and up to 18 °C in Moravia and Silesia. Sunday brings more changeable cloud with scattered showers: 5–10 °C at night, 10–15 °C by day, and somewhat higher in places in southern Moravia.
Next week the weather should begin to improve. At first it will stay changeable with occasional showers, then there will be less cloud and rain. From Tuesday it will be mostly clear, with fog possible in the mornings in places.
It will remain cool for now: overnight temperatures will most likely fall to 5 °C and in places approach zero, with ground frost possible. Daytime temperatures will gradually rise to 15 °C. That could bring back, for a while, the Indian summer that Czechs call “Theresa’s summer” in mid-October. But current forecasts do not suggest heat above 20 °C like the warm spell that is now ending.
