Speeding up to 200 km/h: driver banned from driving flees police between Ostrava and Havířov

In Ostrava, a routine document check turned into a dangerous chase after a Volkswagen driver sped away from police at speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour along the road toward Havířov, police spokeswoman Nikol Bočková reported.

According to her, a patrol attempted to pull the car over on Rudná Street in Ostrava, switching on their flashing lights and the “STOP POLICE” display. However, the moment the signals came on, the driver hit the gas and sped off, ignoring the checkpoint.

Officers only managed to stop the fugitive by setting up a barricade of patrol cars at a roundabout in Havířov, reinforced with a spike strip. Realising he had nowhere left to go, the driver braked in front of the obstacle and got out of the car as ordered by police. Two passengers were also in the vehicle at the time.

A document check revealed that the man was already banned from driving any type of vehicle. While his breathalyser test came back negative, he refused to undergo testing for drugs and psychotropic substances.

According to the spokeswoman, the man is suspected of obstructing the enforcement of an official decision. If found guilty, he faces up to two years in prison.
