Long queues formed on a highway in China's Anhui province during the holidays, as a surge of drivers rushed to charge their electric cars. Mobile charging road trains — essentially giant power banks on wheels — came to the rescue, the Associated Press reports.
These mobile charging units require no changes to the power grid and can be dispatched quickly to wherever the most cars have piled up. Each unit holds more than 3,000 kWh of electricity — enough to charge over 80 cars.
The trailers are fitted with several charging modules and fast-charging cables, so they can serve multiple cars at once. As a result, a battery can go from 20% to 80% charge in roughly half an hour.
Staff on site monitor the queues and direct traffic to keep waiting times to a minimum. When needed, the charging road trains are moved to other rest stops, bringing power directly to drivers stuck in traffic jams.
