EA closes BioWare, the Mass Effect studio, cutting 400 jobs

Electronic Arts shuts down legendary studio BioWare and lays off about 400 people

American video game giant Electronic Arts (EA) is closing the BioWare studio, Bloomberg reported, citing an internal memo from management. Several projects are ending along with the studio, including the planned follow-up to the Mass Effect series, and roughly 400 employees will lose their jobs.

That is about three percent of all EA staff. The memo says the company has spent recent months carefully reviewing its priorities and wants to focus developers and money on the projects with the greatest potential.

“BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the RPG genre, and we are not making this decision lightly,” company representatives Cam Weber and David Tinson said. The studio was behind the popular Mass Effect and Dragon Age series and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

After Bloomberg published its report, the Electronic Arts website was briefly unavailable.
