Trump Says US Will Also Demand Compensation from Iran — In Response to Tehran's Claims

US President Donald Trump said on social media on Monday that Iran is demanding compensation for the five-month military conflict, and in response, the US also intends to seek damages from Tehran. The current standoff began in late February with US and Israeli strikes on Tehran.

Claims on Both Sides

"I see that representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran are demanding compensation for the damage inflicted on them over the past five months of military conflict," Trump wrote, stressing that the strikes were carried out because Washington will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. Tehran has consistently denied seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

According to Trump, the topic of compensation had not previously come up in negotiations, but he liked the idea. "It's an interesting idea, because now I'm also demanding compensation from Iran for all the people they killed and severely injured with their roadside bombs and in the many conflicts they've become known for," the American president said.

Demand to Include It in Future Talks

Trump also noted that Iran should compensate the families of demonstrators who were killed. He said he had instructed his representatives to raise the issue of compensation in all possible future negotiations with Tehran.

In recent months, hostilities have alternated between periods of calm — following a ceasefire and a signed memorandum of understanding — and renewed flare-ups. The issue of control over the Strait of Hormuz remains contentious, with its limited operation pushing global fuel prices higher.
