Two buses collide near Znojmo: 47 injured, driver suspected of endangering public safety

On Saturday morning, a collision between two scheduled buses occurred near Znojmo — one was travelling on the main road, while the other pulled out onto it from a minor road. The crash left 47 people injured, police spokeswoman Petra Hrůzová said on Monday.

According to police, criminal proceedings have been launched against the driver who failed to give way and caused the accident, on suspicion of negligent endangerment of public safety. The cause of the crash has already been determined, and no technical fault was found in either vehicle at the scene. Both drivers were tested for alcohol, with negative results.

The damage from the collision is estimated at 1.5 million crowns. Paramedics treated 47 injured people at the scene. According to rescue service spokeswoman Michaela Bótová, seven patients suffered moderate to serious injuries, 25 sustained minor injuries, and another 15 were examined and left at the scene, with advice to seek medical help if needed.

Most of those injured were adults. Bótová said paramedics also treated one teenager and one small child — the toddler suffered a minor injury and, after receiving first aid, was given Dejfík the plush dog, a special comfort toy used to help children cope with stressful experiences.

The injured were taken to five hospitals in Brno and Znojmo: Brno University Hospital, St. Anne's University Hospital, the Trauma Hospital, the Military Hospital and Znojmo Hospital. The accident forced authorities to fully close the road between Brno and Znojmo for several hours.
