Umag in Istria: why this Croatian resort is a hit with sports lovers and families alike

According to the Czech representation of the Croatian National Tourist Board, Istria was the most popular Croatian region among Czech tourists this July, with Umag, Medulin, Rovinj and Poreč topping the list of in-demand resorts.

Tour operators confirm the trend: according to Aleš Kotek, a representative of the travel agency České kormidlo, Istria remains the most affordable and popular part of Croatia for Czech travelers.

Umag lies roughly 800 kilometers from Prague, and on-the-ground reports suggest it more than lives up to its unofficial nickname, "Croatia's sports town." Around the resort areas of Punta, Stella Maris and Katoro, visitors will find cyclists, families with kids and active-holiday enthusiasts everywhere they look.

The town's jagged coastline is laced with dozens of kilometers of bike paths and seaside promenades, where you can rent a regular or electric bike and ride off through avenues of pine trees. The crystal-clear bays deserve a special mention too — perfect for windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and diving, so water sports fans will have no trouble keeping busy.
